Eligibility

Am I eligible to contract with Therapist Square?

To contract with Therapist Square, you must:

  • Hold an active, independent, unrestricted clinical mental health license in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia (such as an LCSW, LMFT, LPCC/LPC, Licensed Psychologist, or other independently licensed psychotherapist).
  • Maintain professional liability (malpractice) insurance with minimum coverage of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 aggregate.
What if I’m licensed in multiple states?

We welcome psychotherapists licensed in multiple U.S. jurisdictions.

Therapist Square currently focuses its marketing efforts in the following states and the District of Columbia:

Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.

If you’re licensed in additional states, you’re still welcome to contract with Therapist Square. We simply conduct more limited marketing in states not listed above.

Practice Ownership

Is Therapist Square my employer?

No.

Therapist Square is a hiring party—not an employer. You remain an independent, self-employed psychotherapist who controls how, when, and where you provide professional services. We provide the administrative and operational services you choose to purchase while respecting your professional independence.

Do I remain in control of my private practice?

Yes.

You retain complete control over your private practice, including your:

  • Schedule
  • Caseload
  • Fees
  • Clinical decisions
  • Treatment approaches
  • Business policies
  • Availability

Therapist Square does not direct your clinical work or determine how you operate your practice.

Can I continue operating my existing private practice?

Yes.

Whether you’re starting a solo private practice or already have an established practice, Therapist Square’s services are designed to support independently licensed psychotherapists while allowing them to maintain ownership and control of their businesses.

Do I own my clients?

Yes.

Your therapeutic relationships remain yours. Therapist Square provides administrative and operational support services but does not own your practice or direct your clinical relationships with your clients.

Is there a minimum caseload or minimum number of hours?

No.

Therapist Square does not require a minimum caseload or minimum number of client hours. You decide how many clients you see and when you make yourself available for appointments.

Services

Can I choose which administrative services to outsource?

Yes. Depending on the contract option you select, you may choose a comprehensive package that includes most administrative services or select only the services your practice currently needs. As your practice evolves, your service package can evolve with it.

Why should I choose Therapist Square instead of hiring separate vendors?

Therapist Square brings together many of the administrative and operational services involved in running a solo private practice under one relationship. Instead of coordinating multiple vendors for insurance billing, credentialing, scheduling, software support, and other administrative needs, you can choose a coordinated solution designed specifically for independently licensed psychotherapists. You remain fully independent while simplifying the administrative side of private practice.

Can I accept both private pay and insurance clients?

Yes.

Depending on the contract option you select, you may operate a private pay practice, an insurance-based practice, or a hybrid practice that includes both private pay and insurance clients.

What types of services can Therapist Square bill?

For insurance and EAP clients, you may bill for the CPT codes authorized under your individual payer contracts, which may include:

  • 90785
  • 90791
  • 90832
  • 90834
  • 90837
  • 90846
  • 90847
  • 90853
  • 99404

Not every payer reimburses every CPT code.

You may also bill eligible private pay psychotherapy, coaching, business consultation services, and other billable non-session services—such as assessment administration, collateral contacts, report writing, legal appearances, late cancellations, no-shows, emails, text messages, and similar services—provided they comply with any applicable payer requirements.

Referrals & Support

How many referrals can I expect?

Historically, Therapist Square contractors have averaged more than 35 referrals per month generated through our marketing efforts, in addition to internal referrals from other Therapist Square contractors.

Referral volume varies based on factors such as licensure, specialties, availability, geographic location, and market demand. Because these factors differ from one psychotherapist to another, referral volume cannot be guaranteed.

How does Therapist Square support contractors?

Our goal is to provide responsive, knowledgeable support whenever you need assistance.

We respond to Support Requests within one business day (Monday through Friday).

In addition, we offer Weekly Office Hours approximately 44 weeks each year, providing opportunities for technical assistance, practice support, and group consultation.

Medical Records

Who maintains medical records?

Therapist Square serves as the custodian of records and maintains records in accordance with applicable HIPAA requirements.

While contracted with Therapist Square, you remain responsible for responding to your clients’ requests for records and Authorization to Use and/or Disclose Protected Health Information (ROI) requests.

Contract Termination

Can I change contract options later?

Yes.

As your private practice grows and your needs change, you may request a different contract option. For example, many psychotherapists begin with a Subscription Level Contract and later transition to a Percentage Split Contract after meeting the eligibility requirements.

What happens if I decide to end my contract?

If you decide to terminate your Business Support Services Agreement, simply provide written notice by email no later than the 15th of your final month of service.

Your agreement will end on the last day of that month.

After your contract ends, you may no longer bill through the insurance plans or Employee Assistance Programs with which Therapist Square credentialed you. However, you’ll continue receiving direct deposits according to the normal payment schedule until all eligible previously billed services have been paid.
